I have a great respect for marketers. They have a tough job. Trust me, I know because I went to business school for marketing. There’s market research, advertising, promoting, selling, strategy, and so much more. Oh, and I haven’t even started to talk about the numbers. Marketing is serious work and even though my profession falls solidly in the creative realm, my love for it runs deep.
And it is because of my love for and knowledge of marketing, that I have to share my probably unpopular but completely unbiased opinion that: Your marketing team needs a creative writer. Your BRAND needs a creative writer. And I’ll tell you why.
Marketing is all business. At the end of the day it’s about selling. But today’s consumers, in today’s hyperaware and super connected digital world, need more than a celeb endorsement to get them to believe in your company. And with thousands of companies available and easily discoverable with a quick google search, you NEED them to believe in your company. Endorsements, numbers, and cold sales funnels are all a necessary means to an end, but they aren’t all it takes to get a customer in the door (or on the website).
For that, you need storytelling. You need feeling. You need connection. And–brace yourself for a buzz word–you need authenticity. You need be communicating with your people on a personal level. And to get to people’s core, to their hearts, to what’s driving them and their decisions, you need to be creative. You need to know how to talk to them, and you need to make it feel real.
That’s where a creative writer comes in. She can help you develop a story around your brand. And if she’s well versed in marketing–ahem–she can help you do the prep work like creating a brand identity, voice, and other marketing tasks that require a certain je sais quoi. She can talk to your people in a way that connects with them. She’s able to write copy that makes people feel like you get them, like they are part of your community. That takes creativity. That takes a writer who knows how to take a simple paragraph, blog post, or product description and transform it into pure magic.
